Fiji’s election campaign period has officially kicked off, although an election date has still not been announced.
The Electoral Commission announced the campaign commencement on Monday.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is yet to announce the date for the polls, which must be held between 7 August this year and 6 February next year.
However, an indication of the date may come with the issuance of the election writ – at its earliest the writ could be issued on 24 June, which would indicate an election as early as 7 August.
The Electoral Commission has urged all political parties, candidates, supporters, organisations, and members of the public to campaign peacefully, truthfully, and in accordance with the law.
Fiji has held three successful elections under the 2013 Costitution in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
Rabuka’s coalition government is currently a major undertaking a major constitution review exercise as it tries to amend the 2013 Constitution.
Rabuka wants a national referendum to amend the country’s supreme law before the elections.
